HARRIERS.
JUNIOR TITLE. CROSS-COUNTRY RUN AT AVONDALE. The junior provincial cross-country championship was run over a five-mile course at Avondale under ideal conditions. The track was firm and hard, comprising four miles of broken country and li miles of racecourse. Clnpham, of Calliope, and French, of Papatootoc, dead-heated for place with Jack Matthews. 'Varsity, third. The winner's time wns 27.52. Leaving the racecourse at the start, French look the lead from Clapham, with the field hunclied close behind. Up the hill past the ruins to Manuknu Road French and Clnpham slightly increased their lead. At half-way the leaders had gained an advantage of 70yds over Matthews, who was followed by Ohms, Edgar and Anderson, who were teaming very closely. With two miles to go Clapham drew right up to French, and with an occasional lead by French, the pair waged a battle royal from then on to within 200 vards of the finish, where the pace was clapped on. and In a neck to neck finish In which neither gained an inch on the other, thev crossed the line In a dead-heat; time. 27.52. Matthews, the former Tnkapuna Grammar School mile champion, was 170 yards behind in third place. Had he not injured an ankle two miles from home he must have won. Then came Brown, Ohms, Anderson and Edgar in order. A.U.C. CLUB. The University Harrier Club held a welluttended run of about 01 miles, starting from Mission Bay. Two packs were formed. The fast, under the leadership of the club captain, H. T. Jellie, followed a course which included both road und cross-country work. While the ground proved a hit soft underfoot it was good training for those who will be travelling South to take part In the inter-University cross-country championships next Saturday. The slow pack led by A. Ingham, stuck more to the roads. A 100 yds sprint held prior to the main run, resulted in a win for H. Maxwell, followed by It. McElroy and E. Stephenson. The team chosen to represent the college at the inter-University cross-country championships to he held in Christchurch next Saturday, comprises the following men:—C. Francis (captain), E. Stephenson, R. M. Kay, J. D. Matthews, J. McKenzie, L. B. Collins. L. Tweedie will run ns an Individual in this event. The team leaves Aucklan/1 on Wednesday, and expects to hold n training run in Wellington on the Thursday. WESLEY CLUB. Twenty members were present at the run held from the Epsom Methodist Church. The club ran as one pack, following a course similar to the novice championship one, which embraced the One Tree Hill, Mount Smart and To Papa pa districts, covering approximately five miles. TECHNICAL 0.8. CLUB. The Technical Old Boys' Harriers held a run on Saturday from the home of Mr. Richardson, Domain Street. A run of about six miles was covered, including two laps of the Domain and u circuit through Bassett Road back into the Domain. The fast pack, led by Brierly, ran a longer course and came home through Parnell. R. Day led the slow pack, and the handicap runins resulted : —Fast pack : S. Wade 1, C. T. McCombs 2, N. Brierly 8, G. Cates 4. Slow pack : W. S. Wiltshire 1, B. Knight 2, E. J. Laird 3, S. Spencer 4. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. The Presbyterian Club held Its run from Mr. W. Rushbrook's home in Takapuna. A good trail was laid over gentle undulating country, embracing rond, green pastures, bush tracks and cow yards. In the slow pack McGIU, Field and Hancock set u solid pace, while in the intermediates Maudeno and Young figured prominently. The results of the run in were as follows : Slow Pack.—Devitt 1.
