"20BIGHBOTTRI.Y FRIENDSHIP." AMBASSADOR APPRECIATIVE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. The Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Mr. Katsuji Debuchi, was given a civic welcome on Saturday. "Since our arrival in New Zealand," he said in reply, "we have been overwhelmed with kindness and hospitality. My appreciation is difficult to express in words. I can assure you of the wholehearted response your welcome will find in the hearts of the people of Japan. I feel that my mission has been fortunate in its object. New Zealand has indicated its desire for friendship and neighbourly friendship with Japan such as has existed. I thank you from the bottom of my heart." In welcoming Mr. Debuchi and members of the party, the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., was supported by Sir Alexander Young, representing the Government. Mr. Debuchi placed a wreath at the Bridge of Remembrance. The party left for Timaru on Saturdav and went to Mount Cook to-day. On Monday they will visit Dunedin.
