RADIO PROGRAMMES.
There can be little doubt that IYA station programmes are coming in for much criticism from those listeners who want "popular entertainment. Neither is that queer minority (?) which demanded the Franek Sonata from Mcmihin at all well served. I notice that a correspondent recently suggested giving one station all classical items and the talks in order that the other should provide a continuous run of popular entertainment. For the benefit of country listeners, the position would probably best be met by giving the tyvo Auckland stations alternate nights in grovid? ing the bill of fare for that "great majority mentioned by the correspondent. Xow being) like this latter, merely a middle-class person fond of good music, I would use considerable latitude in defining the scope of the classical programmes: Any work bearing an opus number, and anything at all from older composers like Bach, Handel, Byrd, Purcell an" Vivaldi or moderns like Debussy, Ravelj Stravinski, Bax or -Sibelius. Xow not being selfish, but aspiring only to be able to listen to a little music each evening. I would stretch a point and give the popular party IYX all the time and IYA from S-9 p.m. one evening, and from 9-10 p.m. the next, and so on alternately. This would indulge me (see description above) to the extent of six hours''listening per week, with something every evening. Surely this is a reasonable request on the part of one merely hopeful of seeing- justice done to both parties. At present the music lover has many blank evenings if depending on the local Y stations, and yet that great majority (?) still rages and wants the lot. *F. H. ADAMS.
