MILK COUNCIL'S AMBITIONS.
Objections to the proposed amendments to the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Act have been raised by the milk vendors. These amendments were approved by the Milk Council last March, and it is the intention of the Council to bring them before the coming session of Parliament. A deputation from the vendors sought the support of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last evening to resist the proposed changes, but failed to convince the Council that the amendments were "unfair and unjust." In commenting on the amendments last March we said "these proposals are more comprehensive and farreaching than anything envisaged when the Milk Council came into being; they do not stop at control of the purity and price of milk, but open the door to direct financial responsibility and a centralised system." The final result,,if the Milk Council were clothed with the powers it now seeks, might be a municipal milk supply. By gradual steps private enterprise could be ousted from the field, rounds could be bought by the Milk Council and disposed of at its own will; it could raise loans and make a special levy on all milk, and could extend its boundaries. It should be possible for the Milk Council to solve the problems which confront it without becoming an octopus to squeeze and kill the private vendor.--
