ANZACS IN FRANCE.
GERMAN'S HIGH TRIBUTE. PURPOSE OF THE NAZIS. "Of all the troops opposed to us during the war we disliked facing the Anzacs most of all," said Mr. A,, Wollsehlaeger, a German journalist who arrived by the Marama from Wellington yesterday to connect with the Niagara, which sailed for Vancouver to-day. The visitor served with the German army as a machine-gunner daring the Great War. "The Anzacs were good fighters and they knew their stuff quite well," he said. "To understand fully what has happened in Germany since the war, it is necessary to return t<. the war," he said. '"'The political and economic upheavals which have since follow all hinge directly on the sufferings of Germany in those years and in the immediate period following them." Mr. Wollschlaeger said his travels had convinced him that much of the impres* sions the outside world had arrived at concerning Germany were misinformed.
Most journalists who viewed Germany with a view to interpret.!.? what was croin" on there did not stay long enough to see into the heart of things A real understanding of what ItolU attempting could not be gained from an outside view of Germany. Further, it was necessary to see clearly what Germany went through during the war. Only a German who had lived in Germnay, or who had fought for her could possibly comprehend what that meant. "We did not have to fight for our boundaries alone, hut for our food," said Mr. Wollschlaeger Your soldiers, against whom many of us were fi-hting, had plenty of meat m their stomachs, while we had turnips. lhe same thing was going on among the civil population. Almost as many Germans perished in Germany hecause of lnsufhcicnt food as died for her in the front line."
