GLEN EDEN'S ARBOR DAY.
A tree planting ceremony was held at Kearon's Reserve, West Coast Road, yesterday afternoon, 'which was observed as Arbor Day in the district. Mr. A. J. Koutley, chairman of the Glen Eden Town Board, gave a brief outline of the district's history from the time when a dense forest covered the site of the present prosperous township of Glen Eden, through the stages of clearing for native habitations, the cutting by the white man's axe of the kauri, puriri, totara, etc., and finally the operations of the gunndigger. who completed the denuding of the forest. Over 100 trees and shrubs are to be planted, and the first tree, a pohutakawa, was planted by Mrs. W. F. Rosier. Mr. Palmer, who gave many of the plants, spoke on the use and beauty of the trees, both native and exotic. Mrs. Rosier entertained the official party at afternoon tea at the conclusion of the ceremony.
