WIN FOR METRO

MELBOURNE, August 18
The Nerrin Nerrin Handicap at Flemington yesterday was won by the Aew Zealand-bred gelding Metro, ridden by K. Voitre. It was an exciting fanish, the winning margin being only a short head. The August Steeplechase, in which lo started, was won by Harmonic from Pactolus and Disney. It was a memorable event. Six horses fell or lost their riders, resulting in the committee of the Victoria Racing Club deciding that the existing log fences should be replaced with hedge obstacles. Sixteen Annas, winner of the Australian Hurdles, was brought down halt a furlong after the start in the August Hurdles. The rider, L. J. Hynes, said that Ranclea dived right under Sixteen Annas neck. The stewards held an inquiry into the fall, and decided to severely repnman D. Mcßae, rider of Ranclea, and S. Carroll, rider of Ramado, for crossing too quickly. ._. Synagogue and Royal Hunting were unplaced in the Apprentices Handicap, Newhaven and North Cape in the Ihree-vear-old Handicap, Palatinate and Cape Fair in the High-weight Handicap, and Greenhorn in the Nerrin >errm Handicap. The New Zealand-bred four-year-old horee Mananui, by Limond—Rose Queen, won the second division of the Kogarah Stakes, of £150, six furlongs, at Moorefield yesterday. The race resulted:— MANANUI, 8.4 —R. Reed 1 DUAL RATIO, B.6—E. Bartle 2 SOME GOER, 7.ll—Richards 3 Sixteen started. Two lengths; three-quarters. Time, 1.17. Casimer was unplaced in the first division of the Kogarah Stakes. Grand Duke and King of Diamonds were unplaced in the second division of the Flying Welter Handicap. ADELAIDE GRAND NATIONAL. ADELAIDE, August 18. The Adelaide Grand National Hurdle Race yesterday resulted as follows: — SCBUTUM, 9.ll—Smith 1 LAST END, 9.0 —Wilson 2 TOUJOURS, 9.9— H. Smith 3 Ten started. Six lengths.
