HAWERA TRACK.
GOLD GLEAM SPRINTS. FERSEN IN GOOD HEART. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") HAWERA, Monday. With the course proper available for houses with approaching engagements, renewed activity was displayed on the Hawera racecourse on Saturday morning, about a dozen horses being given fast work. The fact that the two-year-olds sprinted two furlongs in 26Mss showed the going to be in very fair order considering the recent heavy rains. The pegs were out 25ft from the rails.
St. Clara was first out, and shaped well in her first fast work for some time, going three furlongs down the back in 425. Celeste sprinted two furlongs iu 27%s in his firet essay against the watch, suggesting that he would do better in company. In a working gallop over seven furlongs Just Off finished a length and a half in front of Bay Sand. It was a useful work-out, and both horees should be improved as a result. Bantry, Lowenberg and Corowa sprinted three furlongs, going from the seven-furlong post. Starting from this peg necessitates an almost standing etart, and the trio occupied over 15s for the, first furlong. Corowa led over the first two furlongs, Bantry being slowest to going. At the end of the three furlongs Lowenberg was a length in front of Bantry, with Carowa two lengths further back, in 445. Ruri and Soloist finished together over half a mile traversed in 575, neither being ridden out. After pacing a round Fersen set out for a solid round, and clapping on the pace at the "three-furlong peg came home in 435, finishing strongly. Fersen has wintered exceptionally well, and is in great heart. Gold Gleam sprinted three furlongs in 41 4-ss, which was practically the best of the morning. The Gay Shield—Persis colt and Brough'e Colossus—Just So filly scampered over two furlongs down the back in 26 1 /£s. The filly was quickest away, but the colt had her measure after a furlong, and finished a length in front. The Gay Shield colt—a half-brother to Gay Seton—has recovered from the effects of his recent mishap, and should make good progress from now on. Onewhetu, Ruaform, Pauloff, Supreme Court, Ingenuity, Silver Wings, Careful and Dombey were all apportioned useful tasks. The youngsters Brilliancy and the Chief Ruler—Melissa filly also did routine work. The gallops on Saturday'should prove of great benefit to those horses intended for the meeting at New Plymouth this month, and steady improvement in the next three weeks can confidently be looked for from the Hawera contingent.
