AUCKLAND CENTRE RACES

ANNUAL WAIMACKU RACE.

A strong north-easterly wind but fine 43-miler over the Waiwauku course, a most difficult and hilly route with hardly 200 vards of continuous level anywhere. For is miles the riders used the main concrete highway, while the remainder wae over metal surfaces. Dust again consulcrablj inconvenienced the riders Rill Barry, of thn Auckland Club, T\as well up when ho was forced off the road bv a doc at Brlgham's Crerk on the \m» back after covering 27 miles. Barry lost much ground before he got going again. Several riders fell in attempting to take the bend too fast, but none was hurt. Of the 60 entrants 48 started, but only 24 finished within the time limit. The limit men had 14.0 start from a strong scratch division. Les. Dwlfjnt, Allan' Robinson, Colin Gooder, Graham HugheS, Sid Pinfold and Stan Alderson. \t the Waimauku turn, 211 miles out, lie ridere shared the lead. The eventual winner, Nixon, took 59.20, as did his fellow markers, Nicholson and Hall. Ron I'oubister and Edgar Raper accompanied them at the turn, having clocked 58.20. Robinson and Gooder had ridden away from the other scratch men to take t<7.10 to reach the turn. On the home run the leading bunch gradually decreased in numbers and at the Henderson radio station, 33 miles, four led, with the ultimate winner, Nixon, and Nicholson then only 05s behind. Seven miles later Nixon and Nicholson caught the leaders. . In a hard finish Nixon just beat Nicholson by half a length, with Robinson another length back. Twenty-six entered for the junior race of 13 1-5 miles. The course was over the concrete highway from Point Chevalier to Te Atatu and back. Scratch juniors were Gillbanks, Holland, Tucker and Carbury. The limit was 3Jm. The placed juniors were :— Phil Johnson off 3.0 (Manukau), 37.32 1 Los. Whyte off 3.30 (Lynndale). 38.7.. 2 George Grigg off 3.30 (Manukau). 38.9 3 K. Elia off 3.30 (Beach Haven), 38.11.. 4 Bert Hoffman off 3.0 (Manukau), 37.49, Theo Stiles off 2.30 (Manukau), 38.10. Joe Gillbanks scr (Manukau), was fastest in 30.54, with G. W. Holland next, then E. K. F. Tucker and B. Carbury. THAMES CLUB. In fine weather the Thames Cycling Club held senior and junior handicap events of 21 and four mile?, respectively. Results:— Seniors. —S. .Tones 5.0. 1 : K. Green 6.30, 2; S. West scr. 3. Fastest time was recorded by S. West, who covered the distance in 57.40. Juniors.-r-R. Martin 1, J. Marshall 2, E. Woofe 3. '. Next Saturday's senior event will be over a distance *f 18 miles. WAIKATO CLUB. A road race from Huntly to Te Kauwhata and return, a distance of 26 miles, was held by the Wnikato Amateur Cycle Club on Saturday. The race was won by the junior G. Bryant (limit), who led throughout and finished one minute ahead of B. King. Result:—G. Bryant 14.0. 1; B. King. 4.0. 2 ; C. Bryant 1.30, 3 ; R. Norman 4 and fastest time.
