MODERN NEWSPAPER.
ASSISTING WORLD TRADE
WARS CAUSE HEAVY LOSSES. "The modern newspaper Tress lias done two things of profound importance in the sphere of economics," said Mr. J. M. Hnrdcastle, business manager of the "New Zealand Herald," in the course of an address at a luncheon meeting of the Auckland chapter of the Xew Zealand Institute of Secretaries in Messrs. Milne and Choyce's reception hall this afternoon. The chairman, Mr. 1). Li, Bone, presided.
"Tim Press lias destroyed the market place," he continued, ";tu<l it has created the world market. JJ:xy after day newspapers of the. world collect and distribute the facts and figures of the world's buying and selling and thus serve us a universal instrument for the levelling of prices throughout the world."
Mr. lfardcastlc exploded the popular theory that wars were profitable to newspapers and that newspapers were therefore inherently militant and eager to foment international discord.
"This view is entirely fallacious," he Mnid. "War disorganises the sources of supplies, interrupts transport, increases the cust of materials, curtails advertising and results in heavy losses to the newspapers."
