Budge Too Good for German Ace
In Davis Cup,
AMERICA TO MEET BRITAIN. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 'J.'M a.m.) LOXDOX, July 24. The remaining two singles in the Davis Cup inter-zone final, at Wimbledon, were won liy the United States, giving the Americans victory over Germany by four rubbers to one.
Henkel never threatened to overcome Allison, who always appeared to be able to develop extra pressure when essential. Nevertheless Henkel fought strenuously and brilliantly. He saved two match points at 7 —o against him in the third set. The mutch was fought out in determined manner, many games going to several deuces. Cramru was feeling the effects of his previous matches, and was unable to stand up to Budge's aggressiveness and brilliant backhand. The third set was fiercely contested, leaving Cramm without reserve power to stand increased pressure from Budge, who took six games in succession for the match. Results: — J. D. Budge beat G. von Cramm, o—o,0 —0, 9—7, B—o, o—3. W. Allison beat H. Henkel, 6—l, 7—5, 11—9. The United States now meets. Great Britain in the challenge round.
CRICKET. AFRICA V. NORTHUMBERLAND. (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON', July 24. In a two-day match against Northumberland, the South African cricketers dismissed the county for IDS (Lee 50, McKay 4(i). Crisp, six wickets for 41, was the most successful bowler.
The visitors had scored 203 for four wickets when stumps were drawn (Xourse 52, Rowan 50).
