ORANGE IMPORTS.
NORFOLK ISLAND SHIPMENT*
FIRST IX THREE YEARS
Norfolk Island was stripped of all marketable oranges when the Union Company's steamer Kairanga, whien arrived at Auckland last evening, called there on her way from Newcastle. The Kairanga brought 2300 cases of oranges, the first that have been imported from the island for three vears.
When, in December, 1932. the Government placed an embargo on Australian oranges. Norfolk Island, as a depen dency of Australia, was included in the ban. As Australia produces more than enough oranges for lier own consumption. the Norfolk Islanders had then no market for their oranges and suffered I severely. But. early this year, a hurricane swept tile Cook Islands, destroying many of the large plantations, and the normal export «>f oranges from there ! was reduced to about a third of tin 1 I normal. The Xew Zealand Government was therefore compelled to lift the embargo on Australian oranges. se\eia! consignments of which have already arrived in the Dominion, ensuring a plentiful supply at reasonaWe prices. The Kairanga's shipment is from "hack yard" orchards at Norfolk Island, the largest single consignment being onlv So%ascs.
