MAJOR GORDON.

RECEPTION BY WOMEN. MANY MOVEMENTS REPRESENTED. In appreciation of the work of Major Annie Gordon, who lias retired after a long period of social service work in the city, a reception was held in the lounge of the Lyceum Club this afternoon. The function was largely attended, the guests being representatives from all (he women's organisations in and around Auckland. From each society, two members were present, and as a. massed whole they conveyed their appreciation to the guest of honour.

The lounge looked particularly attractive for the occasion. On the stage, palms and other greenery made a graceful effect, and in each corner of the room were more masses of greenery and tall Dowering plants. Spring (lowers, in vivid shades, were in bowls on the tables, and log fires, which burned cosily in the grate, added to the general effect.

The reception was organised by Mrs. A. I). Campbell, Mis. Alfred Kidd and Miss Ellen Melville, who received the guests as they arrived.

In presenting Major Gordon with a fireside chair on behalf of (ho women present, Miss Melville (in the absence of the Mayoress, Mrs. Ernest Davis, who was unable to be present), said that the women of Auckland wore desirous of expressing their personal appreciation of the work that Major Gordon had done in the past. Her ability, faithfulness to duty and capacity for understanding had made her an outstanding figure in the social work, not only of the city, but in the whole of (lie Auckland district. It was, added Miss Melville, an extraordinary coincidence that this day on which they were tendering n reception to Major Ciordon should also happen to be her birthday, and on behalf of those present Miss Melville also convoyed birthday greetings to the guest of honour. After a programme of musical items tea was served and the guests spent the rest of the time in expressing personal congratulations to Major Gordon. The programme included items by Mrs. Maud Lvsaght (piano). Miss Hyams (violin), Miss Kay Christie (songs), and Mrs. J. Poole (recitations).'
