SHIP FIRE DRAMA.
Eight Victims of Carbon Monoxide Fumes.
NONE FATALLY GASSED. (Received 2 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Alarm was caused in Williamstown early this morning by a fire in the coal bunkers of the steamer Erica. Eight men fighting the blaze were gassed b> carbon monoxide fumes formed by the burning coal. However, they were hauled up and responded to medical treatment. "When Captain T. Christie and the ship's carpenter, T. Curtis, went below to try to cut through the wooden bulkhead to reach "the seat of the fire, they collapsed and had to be dragged through the hatchway by ropes. Other gas victims were two of the ship's firemen, the chief engineer, the third engineer and two brigade firemen, who were also burnt. Explosions were caused by the ignition of pockets or gas. Tons of sea water were pumped into the bunkers, to which tho blaze was confined. The ship's sailing to Mauritius was delayed.
