STRANDED IN U.S.A.
New Zealand Members of Byrd's Expedition. PROBLEM OF RETURN. (Received 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 11. Two New Zealand youths, Cecil Melrose, of Christchurch, and Francis Smoothv, of Milton, who joined the Byrd Antarctic expedition "to see the world," now face deportation to their own country unless the management of the expedition and others interested in the case manage to secure them passages. For a time the youths enjoyed sightseeing in New York, but now they say their money is exhausted and they are anxious to return home. The Brooklyn Young Men's Chamber of Commerce and the British Consul are attempting to make arrangements for the youths to~work their way home to prevent the stigma of deportation. The latter would involve them staying for some time on Ellis Island. Furthermore it would prevent them ever returning to America. The New Zealanders joined the Byrd expedition at wages of a penny a month to see. the world. .They were discharged two weeks ago with 12 dollars ( £2 10/) between them. The 60 days allowed in the United States has expired.
