ORAKEI SHOOTING.
MYSTERY STILL UNSOLVED. HABD TASK FOR POLICE. So far no arrest has yet been made in consequence of the Orakei shooting ease, when Mr. W. Palmer, a gatekeeper employed bv the Auckland Harbour Board, and officer commanding the Auckland squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen, was ambushed opposite the boatslieds in Ngapipi Road on Monday night. Who fired the burst of shots from an automatic pistol of .38 calibre? What was the motive —especially when Mr. Palmer is widely popular and respected ? These questions remain unanswered. In attempting to find the answers the investigating detectives are confronted with a series of strange incidents, which have occurred both before and since Monday night. Many persons have been interviewed, yet no real progress towards the elucidation of the mystery has been reported.
The scene of the shooting is still the centre of interest, and all day long people arrive afoot, awheel and in
motor cars to inspect it. While Detec-tive-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn, Detective Brown and a constable were searching tho locality this morning and taking measurements, several motorists arrived to take a lively interest in the proceedings.
