PRIZE AWARDS.

POINTS IN BUTTER.

UNITED WOODVILLE FIRST.

CHEESE CUP TO ALTON. The butter points prize—a silver cup —was won by the United Dairy Company, Woodvillc, with 473.5 points. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company's Ngatea factory with 472.8 points was second, and the RangiwahiaRuahine Co-operative Dairy Company (470.0 points) was placed third. The cheese silver cup points prize was won by the Alton Co-operative Dairy Company's factory at Alton with 370.1 points, and the- Stratford Farmers' Dairy Company's factory at Stratford was second with 373 points. Scott and Woods' Memorial Shield for the most points in the cheese section was won by the Takapau Co-operative Dairy Company. This competition was open only to'novice managers, branch managers, and first .'issistants. H Judges' Comments. Tho judges were the Government dairy- produce graders stationed at Auckland grading stores, and the following comnv nt was made on the butter and cheese exhibits — "Concerning the butter section, it is the opinion of the judges that the quality was generally of a high standard. The winning exhibits were very pleasing in quality, being well made butters, possessing a bright and clean flavour. In several instances the judges experienced considerable difficulty in separating prize-takers. Class 2, which comprised butter of March manufacture taken at random from export consignments in cool-stores, calls for special comment. Under ordinary shipping conditions these butters would now have reached the overseas markets. With few exceptions the quality was very pleasing and satisfactory, and on the' market the majority of the exhibits would bo considered to be of 'choice' quality. Special credit must also be given to the exhibits in the class for unsalted butter, the general quality being sound and of a high standard. With the exception of a few. instances, of a slight defect in colour, the exhibits throughout the section reflected considerable credit on those responsible for the manufacture of the butter. "A pleasing feature of the cheese exhibits was the closeness, in texture of the bulk of the exhibits. Flavours were clean and sound, although several entries gave evidence of a slight scorched flavour, and which is inclined to be somewhat bitter on the palate. With few exceptions exhibitors had given close and careful attention to "finish," with the result that the cheese were neat and attractive in appearance. As was the experience of the judges of the butter sections, the cheese judges had some difficulty in making the . awards on account of the even quality of the winning exhibits." . THE AWARDS.
