TREND OF TRADE.

BANK DEBITS A GUIDE. """ MAY A BUSY MONTH. The latest "Abstract of Statistics" furnishes particulars of the bank debits, or the total amount debited to all accounts (excluding Government , ) by the trading banks during each week. The average weekly debits during each month are as follow:— 1932-33. 1933-34. 1034-35. £ £ . £ June ... 10,715,000 10,260,000 ll,7.3;:,000 July ... 10,009,000 10,641,000 11,503,000 August . 8,793,000 0,5,10,000 11,464,000 Sept. ... 7,750.000 0,771,000 10,627,000 Oct. ... 9,903,000 10,678,000 12,165,000 Nov. ... 10,805,000 10,486,000 11,717,000 Dec. ... 10,901,000 12,813,000 13,362,000 1933-34. 1934-35. 1935-36 . £ * £" £ Jan 9,595,000 11,050,000 11,470,000 Feb. ... 12,063,000 15,534,000 14,578,000 March .. 12,411,000 15,203,000 15,650,000 April ... 10,826,000 14,576,000 13,792,000 May 10,345,000 10,710,000 12,864,000 June ... 10,269,000 11,733,000 •11,569,000 *For three weeks only. These figures give a fair idea of the volume of business done generally. They indicate the quieter state of trade during the winter and early spring, when esports are low and internal trade is quieter, and the greater activity in the summer time and the flush of the export season. ! It will be seen that following a very busy Christmas, turnover seemed to have eased in January and February. March was - a good month, but April, after starting briskly, fell off considerably in the third week and the average for the month was below that recorded in April, 1934. The month of May started off well, and, maintaining a good average, registered the highest figures recorded for this month in recent years. June was scarcely so busy, but the decline was seasonable.
