FATHER'S HEROISM.
Infant Daughters Rescued From Fire. CHILDREN SLEEPING SOUNDLY. (Received 1.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Dashing courageously into a smokefilled room, Victor Sleigh, a former leading jockey and now a hotel licensee at Moonee Ponds, rescued his two infant daughters when fire occurred in the hotel early to-day. Although the flames were burning through the door of the bedroom, the children when aroused by their father, were sleeping soundly. The sitting room adjoining was burnt out.
i BUILD GIANT 'PLANES.
SOVIET PUBLIC SUBSCRIBES. (Received 12.30 p.m.) MOSCOW, July 5. The Soviet is building 10 aeroplanes similar to the giant Maxim Gorky, which was wrecked in May through a collision, with the loss of 50 lives. The populace has subscribed a total of £0,800,000.
COMET BREAKS RECORD.
LONDON-PARIS IN 52 MINUTES. (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, July 5. Captain H. Broad, piloting a Comet machine, made a record flight from London to Paris in 52 minutes. The average speed was 250 miles an hour.
BRITISH DEFENCES.
£5,000,000* AIR FORCE VOTE. LONDON, July 5. The Government announces the early presentation to Parliament of a supplementary Estimate of £5,000,000, for the first instalment of the cost of expanding the Royal Air Force. Tho Home Office id sending a circular to local authorities asking them to arrange for anti-air raid preparations in the event of emergency. This does not apply to existing conditions.
15 HOURS ALOFT.
GERMAN GLIDER'S RECORD. BERLIN, July 5. A world's gliding record with a passenger has been established by Siegfried Ruliuke, who stayed in the air 14 hours 57 minutes.
