NEW BISHOPS.
METHOD OF APPOINTING. OBJECTION TO CHANGE. 1 (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON", this day. Criticism of the measure passed bv the General Synod providing for a change in the method of appointing bishops was expressed at the Waikato Diocesan Syliod last evening. The measure provided for the setting up of an electoral college, consisting of three bishops, two other clergy and two laymen, whose duty it would be to select future bishops. Under the present system the bishop of the diocese was selected by the Diocesan Synod concerned. The bishops in oflice were then risked to confirm the appointment. Canon J. L. A. Kyall said the proposal aimed at creating a form of autocracy. He was opposed to Synod delegating its powers to another body. Bishop Cherrington said he considered the measure was invalid. The Synod decided to report its disagreement with the cliangc. WAIKATO TRIBUTE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Friday. Tributes to the work of Dr. T. H. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, were paid by members of the Waikato Diocesan Synod to-day. Archdeacon 11. R. B. Gillespie (Morrinsville) said Bishop Sprott was the most distinguished graduate of Dublin University in New Zealand, and was the most learned of the bench of New Zealand bishops. ■ Archdeacon Gillespie moved, "That Synod learns with regret that it is the •intention of the Bishop of Wellington to resign in January next, and desires to express its appreciation of his work. Synod trusts that he will be long spared to enjoy peace and happiness, and hopes that lie will continue to give his counsels to the Church." Bishop Cherrington agreed that Bishop Sprott was the most learned bishop in New Zealand. He had a profound knowledge of theology and philosophy, and was a most helpful member of General Synod. The motion was carried tinanimously.
