TE AWAMUTU HORSES.

A. COOK'S TEAM.

SOME PROMISING YEARLINGS. JONATHAN RESUMES WORK. Since the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie the tracks at Te Awamutu have been very quiet; in fact it is some years since training has been so dull. There has been no fast work, although trainers hdve been busy preparing their rising two-year-olds, of which there are several, and also giving their teams plenty_ of pace work to fit them for spring racing. A. Cook has by far the biggest string in work, numbering 16; in fact liis team more than fills his own stables, making it necessary for him to lease the boxes owned by the Racing Club, and situated near the town. His present team comprises. Knight of Australia, Jonathan, Lady Ruler, Callisto, Spearwin, Galilee, Salesman, Flit Acre, an Illumination gelding, and four rising two-year-olds—a chestnut colt by General Latour—Prodice, a black colt Philamor, a brown filly a full sister to Supremacy, by Chief Ruler — Lucella, and a colt by General Latour. These are owned by Mrs. S. L. Parsons and Messrs. W. R. Shattock, J. D. Shea and M. H. Tims respectively. Knight of Australia, who has quite a record of minor placings to his credit, is being kept going, and looks quite a picture. This fellow has had a couple of gallops recently, and will be in excellent order to commence the new season. Jonathan returned to the tracks last month. He does not show any signs of his injury in his work, and looks really well. However, he still limpe slightly while walking. It is to t>e hoped that this 'son of Thespian will stand a further preparation. If he does it is quite likely that he will go to Australia. Lar!y Ruler Returns. Lady Ruler has just returned from a spell looking in great heart. At present she is being restricted to jogging exercise. Callisto mi another to be kept going with occasional sprints. This mare rapidly becomes burly, but when right shows much speed. She has thrown off her soreness which was troubling her last season. Anothei of this team to return after a speh is Spearwin. This fellow did not show much promise last season, and was turned out. However, he is to be tried once again. He is a very burly customer, and has not shown anything on the tracks to enthuse over. One of the best of the country's two-year-olds last season was Galilee, who is again in work, and carries a very bright appearance. She is not being hurried, as she has been in work only a week or so. If she goes on the right way she should again be seen to the fore as a three-year-old. Salesman and Flit Acre are others being prepared for the new season's racing, and both look well, especially Salesman. They are getting through a lot of useful work, and.are rapidly coming to hand. Cylarros, who was in work here early last eeason but was not raced, has been turned out. Always a big customer, he has put on a lot of flesh. He has not had a great deal of fast work, but shows pace in what little he has done. He races in the colours of Mr. H. Dent, of Hikutaia. Shows Promise. A newcomer to A. Cook's stable who shows promise is a-gelding by Illumination—Loehella Abbey, a rising five-year-old. This fellow has only been here for about a montt, but shows be possesses a lot of pace, and should. turn out a good proposition' for his owner, Mr. R. D. Fisher, of, Cambridge. At present, it is very'difficult to pick out the best' of the yearlings In work, but those in A. Cook's stable are far ahead of anything in work at present. The Philamor colt has a very bold style of moving, ,;and should go very fast. However, they, are all fairly proficient gallopers, and only time will tell. Mr. W. F. Stone also has a very promising youngster in the Hunting Song—The Begum filly, owned by Mr. A. J. McGovern. This filly has been up for some time, and is fairly' Veil forward. She has not had very much fast work, but what she has doae has been done well. This mentor has also recommiesioned Snow Lap, who was turned out following the Te Kuiti meeting. He carries a very bright appearance, and has evidently been very well cared for. Pi'otom.int Develops Colic. The only other trainer, A. Rowan, has two representatives oh the tracks, these being Musquil and Tonnerre. Both are being given steady work, but are not doing anything of a very strenuous nature.. This owner has had a very anxious time during the last few days with his entire Prqtomint, who was in a bad way with colic, and it was feared he would lose him. However, he has recovered sufficiently to be walked about. This horse's future is very uncertain, but he may be put to the stud. Mr. W. Alexander, who owns and trains Arawa Rose, Sweet Rose and Superior Guard, has his team spelling at present, but is handling a beautiful colt by Speardance—Wee Rose, a full brother to Superior Guard. This fellow is rising three years. • Mr. E. H. Cucksey had the misfortune during the week-end to have his mare Lady Bede throw twin dead foals to Flying Prince. Gay Sister, who ran a nail into her foot before the Te Kuiti meeting, is not yet recovered, and was again operated tipon last week.. J. Skleanars was unfortunate to lose the services of this mare when he did, as she/was showing signs of returning to form.
