THE ARTS BALL.

COLOURFUL COSTUMES WORN. BRIGHTNESS AND GAIETY. One of the most eagerly awaited events of tl.e season is the arts ball, which is held by the president and ball committee r° the Auckland Society of Arts. It is always an occasion of colour and gaiety, and again at the Peter Pan Cabaret last evening the function was a great success. There were all sorts of fancj costumes to be seen. You could walk with kings if you were a coster, while zealously guarding the common touch; you could dance a stately waltz with a sheik or do the rumba with an Early Victorian. There \yas much merriment and things went with a decided swing. The costumes had been carefully selected and some very attractive designs were noticed. They, included historical characters, amueing disguises, extravagant costumes and- attractively simple ones. The grand march was again the event of the evening and with histrionic skill each character played his or her part. Futuristic posters were around the walls and the orchestral dais had transformed the cabaret into a scene in keeping with the occasion. In the supper room were trees of cherry blossom covered with coloured' butterflies which were in each corner, while on the tables were beautiful flowers of the season. There were Iceland poppies, wattle,

jonquils and camelias, these being al jinked up by sprays of red. hemes and autumn coloured flowers. The decorations in the supper room were the work of Miss Eve Vaile.
