VICE-REGAL VISIT.
"WONDERFULLY FINE WORK."
SEAMEN'S MISSION INSPECTED
His first visits to the Sailors' Home, which this year is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, and the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen were paid this morning by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, who was accompanied by* Ladv Gal Way. On arrival at the home their Excellencies, whowereAttended by Sir Standish O'Grady Roche, were met bv the Mayor of Auckland,' Mr. Ernest Davis, the chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. C. G. Jdaclndoe, the chairman, Mr. D. B. Patterson, and other members of the council governing the institution. After their Excellencies had visited the various social rooms and the accommodation on the upper floors, tllev were entertained at morning tea by tne cpuncil. Mr. Patterson expressed the great pleasure it gave the council to be able to welcome Lord and Lady Galway. He recalled that the home had been founded 50 years ago through a magnificent bequest by Mr. Edward Costley. Since then the home had been assisted by a number of prominent Auckland citizens, and it had always been under tlfe patronage of the Governor-General. Great assistance had been received from Lord Jellicoe during his term of office, and after he returned to England Lord .Tellicoe had continued to interest himself in the institution, with the result that an annual grant had been obtained from the King George Fund for Sailors, without which it would bo most difficult to continue the home. Apart from that grant, the home was carried 011 by means of voluntary contributions, what the men who visited the home for accommodation was not nearly sufficient to maintain it.
In conclrsion Mr. Patterson expressed the hope that their Excellencies would find their stay in New Zealand pleasant.
"Wo know the wonderfully fine work you have been doing here in the past, and wish to congratulate you on ytflir jubilee," said Lord Galway. "I assure yo'.i that *ve will do anything wc can to further this cause and to assist the good work which is being done by the citizens of Auckland."
Their Excellencies then went to the Flying Angel Mission to Seamen, where they were received by the chaplain, the Rev. H. K. Vlckery, Commander F. A. Hull, R.N. (retired). Captain H. H. Sergeant. Mr*. W. Skegg, secretary of the mission, and other members of the board of management. Lady Galway was met by the president of the Harbour Lights Guild. Mrs. FrOston Chambers. Their Excellencies visited the social hall, the cliibrooins and the'chapel.
