TRIALS AT EPSOM
STAR PRONTO'S EFFORT,
NIMBUS GOES WELL
The grass track was open for fast work at Epsom this morning, 'but the going was heavy and the times recorded were mostly slow. "The best efforts of the morning were credited to Star Pronto, Lucky Love, and Nimbus. ■
Mute, Manna's Son, and Harvestin were companions over a mile and a half, Mute leading all the way to register 3.56 2-5, the last half mile in 1.17. Manna's Son took 3.58. Mute did his work impressively and was not under pressure in the run home.
Young Rodney and Mountain Sun went away live seconds in front of Tinokaha over a mile and a half, Mountain Sun being in charge until the straight was reached, where Tinokaha moved up sharply to beat Mountain Sun by two lengths in 3.58, the last half mile in 1.15. Mountain Sun took 4.4, his last half in 1.16, while Young Rodney was well back, taking 4.9. Worthy Nor and Wiriwhata jumped away from the mile and a half post, but the latter broke at the start, and Worthy Nor was eased over the first furlong to wait; for his companion. Worthy Nor led all the way to cover the distance in 4.10. the last 'half in 1.18. Wiriwhata registered 3.23 for his last mile and a quarter, the last four furlongs taking 1.18. Sprinted an extra half, Wiriwhata clocked 1.23.
Red Hope went away 4s in advance of Nimbus, Homeward, and Auto Machine in a task ov'er a mile and a half. After covering his first mile in 2.34, Red Hope Was still three lengths clear of the three others, who were in close order. Red Hope began to tiro with two furlongs to go, and Nimbus just shaded Homeward and Auto Machine at the finish. Nimbus took 3.47. the last half mile in 1.13 2-5, while Auto Machine went 3.44 1-5, his last halt mile in 1.12 1-ij. Homeward registered 3.47 3-5. and Red Hope 3.57. Ando Patch was allotted 'strong work, sprinting along the back. He trotted solidly and will race on the second day of the Auckland meeting.
Autumn Lu and Mountain Flight left 2s in front of Chnrteris Bay, with Great Chum another 2s back, and the four went a mile and a half. Great Chum finishing a head in front, of Charteris Bay in 3.58 1-5, and covering his last half mile in 1.15 1-5. Charteris Bay went 4.0, his last half in 1.16. Autumn Lu and Mountain Flight, who finished four lengths away, took 4.2 4-5 and 4.3 4-5 respectively.
Arabond, on the cinders, was given Stronjjf work over two miles, sprinting his last half mile in 1.7.
Star Pronto, Lucky Love, and Kewpie's King were companions over a mile and a quarter, but Kewpie's King, who is sore, broke after going a furlong, and was pulled up. Star Pronto and Lucky Love were together practically all the way, the former shading his companion at the finish in 3.8, the last half mile in 1.11. Lucky Love recorded 3.7 4-5, the last liaH mile in 1.11 2-5. Both horses went particularly well, and Star Pronto promises to take a lot of boating in his engagements at the Auckland meeting.
Silver Watch and Kewpie's King went away 5s in front of Kewpie's Triumph, but the pace wa.s slow early, and Kewpie's Triumph soon went to the front, finally winning easily in 3.4!), his last half mile in 1.10. Silver Watch, who did not pace evenly over the first mile, improved to run hie last half mile in 1.15 2-5. Kewpie's King was not unduly hurried to register 4.0. Cherrill picked them up at the mile and a quarter, but broke twice and took 3.23.
