CRUSOE'S ISLAND
[ Easter Island and Juan Fernandez have been declared national parks by the Chilian Government. Easter Island is some 2200 miles from Chile, and owes its name to the fact that its discoverer, the Dutch admiral Roggeveen, landed there on Easter Day of J722. it measures only 50 square miles and has few inhabitants, but is famous for its wonderful statues, about 500 in number, the origin of which is still a mystery. Juan Fernandez is the name of a Pacific island group some 400 miles from Chile. The chief island was discovered by Juan Fernandez in 1505, and there I the Scot, Alexander Selkirk, maintained] himself for over four years in 1704-9,1 after leaving his ship through »a quarrel; with its master. This notable adventure, gave Defoe the basis of "Robinson Crusoe." Tt is a beautiful island, only j T3 miles long and four wide; its precipitous volcanic rocks are contrasted wjth j rich vegetation, which supports a certain amount of animal life. * '
