MEETING OF COUNCIL.
TARANAKI AND WELLINGTON REPORTS. CLP AND.WAITAXGI SHIELD CHALLENGES. At tho meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby League last evening, the president, Mr. Cyril Snedden, paid u stirring tribute to the loss of the patron, the late Mr. James Carlaw, and the record of condolence was supported by a suggestion that the Auckland Rugby
League should collaborate in the hanging of a special memorial in the reception" hall of the grandstand at Carlaw Park. The council gratefully acknowledged also a tribute to the deceased by the Auckland Rugby Union. Welcomes were accorded to Mr. A. Adam, secretary of the 'i'aranaki .League, who reported that satisfactory progress was being made in his province, and to Mr. V. x\L Simpson,' chairman of the Wellington League. Standing orders were suspended for the taking of a special report in regard to Wellington. Mr. Simpson assured the council, in the course of extensive remarks on the position, that the game was now well on its feet in Wellington, and that prospects for tne future were never bettec. He particularly emphasised the public interest attracted to the developments conducted under efficient management. Mr. Simpson was heartily thanked for his report.
The Taranaki and Northland Leagues notified challenges for the Waitangi Shield, and these were referred to the Maori Control Board. The Northland League's entry is the Takahiwai Maori team, which is unbeaten in the Northland championship so far this season. The West Coast League entered challenges for the Northern Union Cup and the Anisy Shield, both held by Canterbury. The latter trophy is for South Island competition.
Correspondence was received from the Australian Rugby League Board of Control advising that its secretary, Mr. H. R. Miller, would arrive next week in connection with the Australian visit. On his return he will report to the Australian board at a meeting to be held- at Brisbane. Mr. Miller is due to arrive at Auckland on Wednesday, and arrangements were made for his official reception at the next meeting.
Mr. E. Stalhvorthy reported on his recent trip with Mr. Snedden to Whangarei, where satisfactory arrangements were made for the purchase of a headquarter's ground by the Northland League. Saturday matches had now started with much success.
The i\ew Zealand Referees' Association's annual report and balance-sheet were received. The former appealed for closer contact from the associations of affiliated centres.
