WAIPA RIVER BASIN.
CONTROL BOARD PROPOSED. (From Our Own correspondent.) OTOROHANGA, Wednesday.
At a meeting of settlers interested in the willow clearing in the Mangaorongo Stream, where the course is blocked over 13 miles and the water cannot get away, it was deckled to form a committee, consisting of Messrs. E. O'Brien, E. Roberts and M. Anso, for the purpose of going into the question of forming a drainage board. At a subsequent meeting of settlers f»om all other areas in the district, the formation of a river board to cover the Waipa River basin and tributary stream was approved, and a committee consisting of Messrs. E. O'Brien, G. Richmond and W. Cowley was appointed to work with the County Council in calling a conference" of local bodies in the Waipa Basin, with the ultimate object of forming one large board to cover the territory. It was shown that in the past 10 years the blockage, both of river and streams, had increased considerably, and Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., who was present, held that the Waipa Kiver should again become a navigable waterway, capable of being traversed by canoes or launches from Otorc- 1 -inga to Ngaruawaftia.
