50-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. TAKAPUNA, CLUB'S RACE. The event held on Monday was the eagerly awaited 50-miler, an open race, on a course from Dcvonport through Birkenhead, Albany, Silverdale, to Orewa, and returning to Takapuna.
This event, which was the most ambitious staged by any club, brought an enthusiastic response in the way of starters and spectators. From 127 nominations only nine elected to scratch, leaving the largest field yet to start in an amateur cycle event here. The trophies were well distributed, pedallers from Auckland, New Plymouth, Hawera, and Dargaville gaining places. With such organisation as to earn favourable comment from racers and onlookers, everything went off from start to finish without a hitch, even the weather leaving nothing to. be desired.
The main part of the route taken was in good condition, only one stretch being d9wn in heavy, loose metal. Despite the hills, the course was fast, and from the huge field many fell by the way, punctures proving the Nemesis of most. Quite a few of the pedallers hastily pulled up, effected repairs, and were off again in record time in a vain endeavour to make up the valuable time lost. Quite a number of tho greener riders were dropped by their bunches at Kauri Gully.
G. Peters, a 16-year-old youngster, having his first road race, started oft' the limit and kept the field sweating in an endeavour to overhaul bim. L. Laloli, however, was the only rider able to do this. G. Boiirke and A. Brasell, both from Hawgra.. also proved pretty tough, the latter rider finishing in fourth place after being forced to go over a 20-foot bank to avoid an oncoming car.
The main placings were as follow: L. Laloli (Auckland), 21i 47m 465, I; I. Peters (New Plymouth), 2h 58m 17s, 2; G. Bourke (Hawera), 2h 45m 425, 3; A. Brasell (Hawera), 2h 46m 14s, 4; J. Hall (Manukau), 2h 39m 58s, 5; R. G. Whitley (Manukau), 2h 56m 455, 6; L. Roberts (Lynndale), 2h 45m 465, 7; W. Willis (Lynndale), 2h 49m 40s, 8; N. Helliwell (Lynndale), 2h 48m 41s, 9. G. Brown, of Manukau, gained' fastest time honours in 2h 37m 50s. He finished in'fourteenth place. G. Hall gained second fastest time.
E. Lo'vell, who finished sixteenth, gained the trophy for the fastest Takapuna rider to finish, also the first junior trophy. His time was 2h 51m 525.
S. Laurence claimed the trophy for the first Takapuna senior rider home. His actual placing was 24th and time 2h 55m 4s. A. Parker was 29th, with L. Coleman finishing in 30tli place, after his best effort to date. G. Towart gained the trophy presented to the oldest rider to finish in the time limit. This was easy, as Gil. had a break of six years, and although he mended a puncture, completed the distance with 18% minutes to his credit.
Although the Takapuna boys failed to get any of the major placings, they arc to be congratulated on a favourable comparison with riders of any other club. Over a dozen failed through machine trouble to finish the distance, among them being three of the club's hopes, Jones and Williams, our scratch men, and R.
Eagles, all of whom were going strongly before being obliged to take the roadside.
The club extends its sincere thanks to the Auckland Centre officials, all other officials, St. John Ambulance men, Takapuna scouts and" lady helpers who cooperated so willingly to make this day such an outstanding success.
