In reply to the South African's total of 268, the Lancashire eleven, county cricket champions, were dismissed for 128, Ho;;wood carrying his bat right through for 73. Owing to bad light stumps were drawn when the visitors had lost six wickets for 142 in their second innings. This left them 282 runs on, with four wickets still to fall. While Hopwood gamely plodded on for three hours, a tricky wicket caused Lancashire a series of disasters. Nevertheless, a tenth wicket put on 44 runs, saving the follow-on. Scores: — SOUTH AFRICA.
