HOLIDAY TURF.
G.N. HURDLES DAY. STANCHION WINS HANDSOMELY. THREE MEETINGS IN SOUTH. OTAKI, WINGATUI AND ADDINGTON. The Auckland Racing Club's winter carnival opened at Ellerslie in fine weather before a large attendance. The track, however, was heavy. The principal events arranged for to-day were the Great Northern Hurdles and Cornwall Handicap. Wednesday's big races are the Great Northern Steeplechase ard King George Handicap, while on Saturday the Winter Steeples and York Handicap comprise the double. The more recent winners of the hurdles were: 1927, Wedding March; 1928, Beau Cavalier; 1929, Mister Gamp; 1930, King's Jest; 1931, Prince Lu; 1932, Landmark; 1933, Make Up; 1934, Wee Pat. There are two other racing meetings in the Dominion this afternoon—Otaki and Dunedin. The one trotting gathering is at Addington, where the Canterbury Park Club terminated its two-day programme. Stanchion won the Hurdles from Free Air and Valpeen after ah eventful race.
