MONDAY, JUNE 3, 1935. BIRTHDAY HONOURS.

For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in '.he distance. And the good that we oau dc

Excepting perhaps for war-time conferments, this year's list of Birthday Honours bestowed on New Zealanders must be the longest in the Dominion's history. It is certainly the widest in its scope, and for these two reasons it may fairly be described as more interesting than any previous list, at any rate in normal years. It includes not only several persons who are prominent in public life, but it recognises in many cases social service and work in the arts. The Army, politics, the Bench, science, the Civil Service, the Church, philanthropy, literature and art, are included in a list that at once impresses by its comprehensiveness.

The acting-Prime Minister will receive the congratulations of all parties on his knighthood. Sir Alfred Ransom is a popular Minister, and everybody recognises that in the direction of the Department of Lands there have been special problems in these years • of depression and readjustment. The knighthood bestowed on Mr. Francis Frazer comes just after his retirement from the presidency of the Arbitration Court, which he held for a long period. By general consent Mr. Justice Frazer was an admirable head of the Court, but it may not be generally realised how difficult and arduous his work was. BrigadierGeneral Herbert Hart, a capable and conscientious officer, receives a knighthood at the end of a difficult period as Administrator in Samoa. The congratulations that are due to that veteran journalist and newspaper director, Mr. Henry Horton, on his knighthood will come from a wide circle of friends in the newspaper and business worlds. "Sir Henry Horton has spent nearly fifty years in the business. He is managing-director of the "New Zealand Herald," one of the great newspapers of the Empire, a paper whose fine qualities are recognised far and wide; he has been an active member of inter-newspaper organisations; he is a prominent figure in the Auckland business world; and he has found time for work on public bodies.

The arts and social service are better represented than ever before, and it is gratifying to note the honouring of so many women. These include Mrs. W. R. Wilson, of Auckland, who, among other activities, founded the Girl Guides movement in the Dominion; Edith Howes, authoress; and Dr. Doris Gordon, the chief organiser of the campaign for the establishment of a chair of obstetrics at Otago University. Professor Elder, of Otago, is the author of several works on New Zealand history, including recent books on the Marsden period. Mr. Johannes Andersen has several books to his credit, besides being librarian at the famous Turnbull Library, and he has done much to stimulate interest in Maori culture and New Zealand natural history. Mr. C. F. Goldie is New Zealand's best-known artist, who has captured So faithfully the likenesses of vanishing types of Maori. Perhaps the most popular honour of all, however, is the M.B.E. bestowed on that muscular and highly Unconventional Christian, the Rev. Jasper Calder. Altogether it is quite an exciting Honours List.
