FINANCIAL RECOVERY.
AUSTRALIA'S POSITION. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 30. Bankers, shipowners and merchants interested in Australia attended a dinner in honour of Mr. J. A. Lyons. The Prime Minister, in a speech, referred to the recovery in the finances of Australia since 1931. He said that instead of a deficit of £40,000,000 which then faced them, there had been a steady improvement, and a surplus each year. Since he left for England the improvement had continued. In one month the financial position had improved to the extent of £1,000,000, and they entered the year with the prospect of a bp lanced Budget. The situation had been dealt with by no fantastic methods, but by recognising that as a nation they had to live within their means, pay their way and so earn the respect of the world.
