JUBILEE MEMORIAL.
OUR CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT.
(To the Editor.) I would like to support Mr. Alan Muigau's suggestion as to the 'best memorial of the present Royal Jubilee being a determination of the people to advance the aesthetic and cultural life of our city. The various musical societies arc languishing for want of support, which ought not to be in a city with a population approaching a quarter of a million. To quote Dr. Buck, King Edward professor of music, University of London: "If I were charged with improving the artistic education of the world I would not go among the poor. I would go among the rich and well educated; they are the people who need teaching. It matters a lot what tunes the people are brought up on, but the world at large does not believe that I have been trying for years to get educational authorities to believe that music does something for people that the world cannot afford to do without." Let us, then, at this Royal Jubilee, determine to live down the stigma* Auckland lias acquired of being the least artistic city of the Dominion. JULIE FENTON.
