THEFT CHARGE FAILS.

Appearing on summons in t.he Police Court this morning, charged with stealing a hat valued at £1 15/, an elderly man, W. H, Devonport, pleaded not guilty. Senior Detective Hall prosecuted, and Mr. G. P. Finlay represented the accused. After listening to much evidence, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said the accused was an old man with an excellent reputation. Some of the evidence given by the prosecution was distinctly in his favour. There was a doubt about the matter, and he was entitled to the benefit of it. The charge was therefore dismissed.
