CANCER CAMPAIGN.

AUCKLAND DIVISION'S WORK. KOYAIi JUBILEE GIFT. "May I again take this opportunity of emphasising the gravity of the cancer problem in our midst," said Dr. Neil McDougall, speaking yesterday at the annual meeting of the Auckland division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. He made an appeal to the* public to contribute to the Royal Silver Jubilee gift, subscriptions to which are to be devoted to the advancement of cancer research in the Dominion. The assistance of the Government, he added, had made the giving of subscriptions easy. All that had to be done was to pay a contribution in to any post office. "The fight against this terrible scourge must be won," he added, "and it cannot be accomplished without money." Money contributed, he said, would be spent in securing better and more up-to-date X-ray and other appliances for more effective treatment. Money would also be spent in extending the search for the causes of the disease, for securing statistical data In assessing the results of treatment", and for the study of curative advance. He contradicted any statement that the Auckland division had in hand a large sum for cancer work. The amount was actually only £3500. Locale of Research. The chief expenditure of the division, stated the report, had been the quarterly contribution to laboratory research work under Dr. A. B. Begg, of Dunedin. The Auckland division had raised the question as to whether the work should be transferred to a larger centre, such as London; but the other three divisions had favoured Dunedin, and a further contract had been entered into with Dr. Begg for sevin years. The Auckland division had promised support at least until next November. The division had decided to press forward a comprehensive scheme for co-ordinating statistical and clinical work throughout the Dominion- The possible purchase of radium was also an important object. The treasurer, Mr. M. R. O'Shea, said that assets at the beginning of the year totalled £4502, and at the close £4318. a drop of £274. The major payment had been £300 to the New Zealand branch. Officers were elected as under: — President, Mr. Ernest Davis; vice-presi-dent, Dr. McDougall; lion, secretary, Mr. D. Robb; lion, treasurer, Mr. O'Shea; executive, Mrs. K. Gordon, Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, Mr. Bruce Mackenzie, Mr. Donald McKenzie, Mr. W. Wallace, arid Dr. W. Gilmour.
