NELL GWYN, FILM STAR.
PLAZA'S COMEDY.ROMANCE,
Even the self-castigating English—critics and public alike—have for once turned to the use of superlatives when speaking pt "Nell Gwyn," the new romantic comedy which is to be given its premiere showing in Auckland at the Plaza Theatre tomorrow. In this most entertaining production a page is torn from England s colourful Royal history. Commg immediately after the prudish black-girl Commonwealth days, the period of the Restoration was one of laughter and Of kindly lovers, Henry VIII. was hearty and lascivious, but Charles 11. was gay and debonair, and refined in taste. Witty, pretty Nellie dances for Charles, and for all hearts, in "Nell Gwyn." In this film. Charles says: "A National Debt of £2.000.000; and in the bank £11 2/10, Mr, Pepys. The kingdom is torn, bleeding and angry. By the grace ot God I shall restore it to its grace and good humour." No mean ambition, this. The King of Good Fellows was just the man to carry it out, and Nell just the girl to encourage. And Noll! At 18 she dances in Old Drury Lane Theatre, singing "There's a Kiss in the Dark for a Lad F Know." and tosses a wink to the monarch in his box. "Why should I be different from other men ¥' asks Charles. "Well, you wear a crown," counters Nell. "On me head, yes—bilt the rest of me's a man, excuses Charles; and they both rock with infectious laughter. ;. V.V, Anna Neacle is Nell just as perfectly as Sir Cedric Hardwicke is Charles in this British picture.
