The test for new motor drivers, long part of motoring experiences "down under" is now in full swing in England. It has had surprising results. But perhaps tho most surprising wan the failure of many racing drivers, men and women, who took part in the ordinary police tests at Eastbourne this week to decide the various awards in the R.A.C. rally. Ardent winners of classic speed events, who had risked their lives on Brooklands and in road races, blushed as pink as their sports ears when an ominous crash told them they had uprooted a pillar which they should have avoided. Ordinary motorists watching tho processings felt a new confidence in their driving when the idols failed. The men- who made a mess of it looked more self-conscious than the women. It was the reversing through a small space that caused all the trouble. A noted woman racing driver overshot the mark by ibout 100 yards. She laughed that off and reversed back to the°scene of action. She then scattered some officials and smiled that away. Then 1 she reversed into the wrong aperture. \ driver whose name is known to all racing enthusiasts came up to the obstacles in fine style on a super sports car and proceeded in reverse to knock down everything in sight His face went the colour of beetroot. He was followed by an unknown amateur driver in an ancient car, who passed the test with full honours. I
