PORTER KILLED.

WANGANUI ACCIDENT.

WALKING ACROSS RAILWAY,

TRAIN APPROACH UNNOTICED

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WANGANUI, Wednesday

A railway porter, Mr. John Ross, aged 38, a married man with a wife and four children, was killed by the Wellington-Wanganui express near the Taupo Quay railway crossing at four o'clock this afternoon.

Mr. Ross was employed to-day as an assistant in a shunting gang at the Wanganui railway yards. Mr. Robert Kerr, who was in charge of the gang, was preparing a mixed train for departure to Ilawera at 4.15. He was being helped by Mr. Ross. Pending the arrival of the engine from the sheds they went to the shunters' hut. They then followed one another out of the hut to check the points on the far side of the main line.

Mr. Kerr was in front and Mr. Rose a few yards behind. Neither noticed the approach of the express from Aramolio, and Mr. Kerr, looking back after crossing the line, saw Mr. Ross being struck by the engine. The train was brought to a standstill, but the unfortunate man's body was seriously mangled. Mr. Ross had been in Wanganui einee June, 1033.
