EASTER BOWLING.

FOUR TOURNEYS FINISHED.

GREY LYNN SUCCESSES

KING'S JUBILEE FUNCTIONS

(By TRUXDLER.)

litis is distinctly Grey Lynn's year in Auckland bowling, for never before has a club in tliiri centrc won the Dominion links and three centre events in one season, the latter being the pairs last mouth, won by W. McMurchy and E. E. Buckley, and the executive fours and junior fours won last Saturday. Warm congratulations are due to T. Shaw, T. W alkcr, I{. (J. Caddy and E. E. Buckley lor their victory in the former, for Buckley has skipped the winning rink on two previous occasions, but it must be particularly gratifying to him, and also to his club, that he has now won it for the tirst time as president, and this follows the growing conviction that every rink in this competition should include the president, preferably as skip. The dub members must also be very pleased with the win in the junior fours, carried off hy C. Cox, W. Mcintosh, 11. Gadil and H. Prince, for they have consistently supported tiiis contest since it was instituted, not only by entering several rinks, but also by conducting a similar tournament themselves. Their next, by the way. is in celebration of the King's Silver Jubilee, for which a full entry lias been already received.

In actual numbers these four events were exceeded in the 1929-30 season by Carlton, when C. H. de Launay. won the ventre's open singles, G. L. Gladding and S. Jenkin, the Dominion pairs and the ventre's open pairs, H. U. Clarke the (champion of champions, Taylor, Shields, Brown and A. G. Brown the first-year fours, and W. J. Bates, G. L. Gladding. J. S. Kilgour and W. E. Arey the executive fours, biit the Dominion rinks ehampionship is usually regarded as quite equal to four or five other events. Reference to that season is a reminder that Mr. Arey took advantage of the bright afternoon last Saturday to look in at the Mount Eden green for a short time, his tirst appearance since he was overtaken by his distressing illness while in London last year, and ho was heartily congratulated on having recovered sufficiently to be about again.

A very noticeable coincidence in connection with the three centre finals to the credit of Grey Lynn this season is that oil each occasion Epsom supplied the runners-up. However, the lend and the nkip in the Epsom executive rink, Vicepresident J. MeDotigall and President P. Fwnell, got in early with their win this season, for they were in the rink who won the Christmas tournament, when they jtave Onehunga the first of their run of unfortunate finals.

The actnal final in the executive fours was robbed of the keen interest generally given by the spectators, owing to the commanding lead vary quickly established Tby Grey Lynn. They were 16 to 4 on the tenth head, and. 18 to 6 on the fourteenth, after which it was only ncces*ary to play for safety, for they had Epsom at their mercy. It was just the (opposite in their semi-final, when they defeated Gray (Devonport), for the latter notched ten on the first five heads and was 13 to 6 at twelve heads. Appar«ntly 13 was not much good to Devonport, for Buckley did nearly all the scoring thereafter, and ran out with a margin of four points. The other semi-final gave Eurnell (Epsom) a pronounced win against Moon (Te Papapa). Well supported by McDougall, Hooper and Jervis Wright, President Furnell secured 8 to nil at five heads, and led all the way. The only really close game in this event was in the first round. Gray (Devonport) led Kelly (Balmoral) all the way, but Buckley had a fine game against Loram (Rocky Nook), with nothing between them all the way. Commencing the last head Grey Lynn were one up on the card and lying the shot with a toucher, the jack being just visible. Loram drove, but instead of picking out the shot ,-bowl, he. switched the jack almost straight across' the rink, unfortunately leaving him four down. Buckley failed to block the head and Loram drew the shot for a tie. Playing the twenty-second head, Loram was the shot when Buckley had to play his last bowl. It seemed a yard or two oyer the head, apparently with the intention of trailing the jack or promoting a bowl in the draw, but it did even better; it rubbed off the short bowl for shot, and a w ' n - „ , The junior fours final opened with a slight advantage to Epsom, but the turning point came at about the fourteenth head, when Grey Lynn were two down on the card, and also two down on the head. With his last bowl Prince played a beautiful trail, turning two down to five up and establishing a lead of three, which was steadily increased until the end. The prominent feature in the final of the first-year fours was the effective game played by the .Edendale lead, S. Watts, for the opposing Hallyburton Johnstone rink were continually losing bowls in | attempts to get rid of the shot against them. This happened eo often that Edendale were 21 te> 14 on the sixteenth head,' and they did all the rest of the scoring. The Easter fours will be reviewed later. The Onehunga champions, Alex Robertson and Frank Livingstone, have at last received some compensation for their disappointment in reaching the final in five major tournaments this season and suffering defeat on the post, for they landed the Cambridge final on Saturday, with the support of J. Macklow and A. K. Gatland. This is the eleventh time that a rink from Auckland has won this popular tournament since it was instituted 26 years ago, and it seems to rank in favour as quite equal to Rotorua, having no dim-1 culty in filling its entry of 54 rinks, as against Rotorua's 55 each year. It is worth nothing that when Arthur Parsons (Pousonby) won the final last week of the Onehunga tournament, when he defeated the famous ex-championi ot Whangarei, Frank Coburn, it was his 99tu win, including the Dominion rinks, the executive fours (twice), the centre s pairs, single and champion of champions, and nine times club champion of lonsonbj. Although 99 is the favourite number of the doctors, one may rest assured that Parsons will not be happy until he makes Bowlers have responded admirably to 'lie suggestion of the Prime Minister that anorts bodies should celebrate the King s 3il--er Jubilee by holding special functions. In addition to the Grey Lynn junior tournament already mentioned, to iext Saturday afternoon and all <la.v .on Monday.
