CARS IN COLLISION

GRAFTON BRIDGE ACCIDENT. Three cars were involved in an extraordinary accident on Grafton Bridge about eleven o'clock this morning, and one car was badly damaged. No one was hurt. A heavy Studebaker tourer, driven by Mr. Bruce Blackie, a mechanic employed by the Royal Garage, Grafton, was travelling across the bridge toward Symonds Street. In front of him was a lighter car driven by a woman. Travelling in the opposite direction (toward the hospital) was a Chrysler ear driven by Mr. W. C. Whitney, of Mount Eden. The Studebaker bumped into the back of the car driven by the woman, and then skidded on the slippery surface of the bridge. It slithered at an angle and crashed into the oncoming Chrysler. Although it was. not travelling fast, it hit the Chrysler with considerable force, a heavy dumb iron on the front bumper smashing the front axle and damaging the mudguard of the Chrysler. Although the driver of the Chrysler put 011 his brakes, the collision knocked the car backwards at an angle with such force th«t both the inside wheels' jumped the footpath. And there it rested until it was. towed away by a wrecking car.
