MAORI REMAINS.
IN NORTH AUCKLAND CAVE,
STORY OF OTAXT REVIVED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Friday.
During the past week natives have been engaged 111 gathering the remains of a famous chief and his warriors from an old cave, for reburial at Poroti. The occasion was celebrated by a hui.
It is understood that the remains of 25 men were removed in addition to four large greenstone axes. Among the remains recovered was one oi an abnormally large mail. The skull was approximately 32in in circumference, and the jawbone, with a full perfect set of teeth, could be placed with Sin to Spare over the jaws of any of the other natives. The bones of the lower leg were almost as high as the hip of the presentiday well-built youth. There is an old story ,of a giant who was believed to have lived with the natives in that district.
The cave from which the remains were taken is about a mile from the road through Poroti.
