BRITISH WHALING.
ANTARCTIC VENTURE. Sir Macpherson Robertson's Proposals. PREPARED TO BACK SCHEME. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright! (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, March 29. Sir Macpherson Robertson, of Melbourne, told the "Sun-Herald" that he intends to start a movement to develop Antarctica. "Mawson told me that Antarctica has all the potentialities of Alaska, from which the United States has made hundreds of millions of pounds," he said. "After Britain has rejected the opportunity to buy, I will first endeavour to initiate British whaling in Antarctica in view of the danger of Japan too firmly establishing herself there. lam prepared to back a suitable enterprise financially, because I feel that whaling can be made the spearhead of intensive development." ■
A Capetown message states tliat the Royal research ship William Seoresbv returned, from the Antarctic, where 700 whales were "tagged" with lOin aluminium darts. Each dart was numbered and bore a request to be returned. It is hoped to establish the migration of whales. The William Scoresby encountered terrific storms.
