AUCKLAND NOTES.
The music season in Auckland opened last Monday evening with a concert by the Auckland Society of Musicians and presented in the form of a Gilbert and Sullivan" evening. Other fixtures arranged by the society for 1930 are:— March 11, "Scandinavian and lunnisli Music," with explanatory remarks; \pril 8, "Mendelssohn" concert; May M \ Sunday afternoon), Schubert's "Winter Journey Cycle," with lecturette by Mr. E Varley Hudson; July 8, local composers' evening (alternative, medieval music); August, probably musical competitions; September 15 (Sunday afternoon), "Schumann and Schubert concert; October 14, concert of modern music by associate and circle members; N ovem ber 11, concert in costume Ike Royal Auckland Choir has already started rehearsals for its opening concert to be given in May. Two more concerts will bo given in August and November. The choir lias lately been -iven a large quantity of iiew music and selections from this, five in number, Will be sung at the next concert. The dates selected for the Auckland Chamber Music Society's recitals are as follow:—April 10, June 5, August 7 and October 2. The society's concerts have, in the past, been given on Monday nights but, as will bo seen from the foregoing dates, a change has been made Ito Wednesday for this season Die fol- | lowing works are to be presented at the concert on April 10:-Trio in D Minor Opus 07 (Arensky); Sonata for cello ! and piano, in F major, Opus 0 (Richard 1 StraiU; trio in B flat, Opus 97, "The Archduke" (Beethoven) The players will be Miss Lois Walls (violin), Mi" Leila Heinus ('cello), and Miss Dora Judson (piano). Miss Walls is sub!it tuting"for Mr. Haydn Murray, who lie away on tour. The Bohemmn OrchesI Ira held its annual, general meeting on Wednesday last and the Auckland , Choral Society's meeting takes place on : Tuesday evening next. Miss Leila Bloy, one of Auckland's most promising young j violinists, is to give a recital on Apnl 11 The Orpheus Club is to hold its first evening on April 15, while the Classic Club probably will'hold its opening night on the third Tuesday in April.
