"THE COURT STANDS ADJOURNED."

The assizes were due at Galway. The judge arrived at ten o'clock, was received in liecoming state, and proceeded to his billet at the house of the Sheriff of the county. A goodly company sat to lunch. As sometimes happens in Galway the conversation turned on horses. His lordship loved horses. He loved them in the stables, in the shafts, in the saddle, and on the racecourse. Perhaps he had an inclination towards racemeetings. "Mr, Sheriff," said his lordship, "when is your next race meeting?" "To-morrow, my lord." "To-morrow! But tho court opens to-morrow!" "Yes. my lord." "But —or, in Galway —er, I have heard so many strange things about Galway, can you be sure of tlip. witnesses and the counsel attending?" "Oh, yes, my lord, we have most of them under lock and key." "Really, really, Mr. Sheriff, most unconstitutional —most. No wonder the county is in an unsettled state. Er—by the way, Dr.—Dr Gorham—l think, I suppose you are perfectly satisfied with the sanitary condition of the court?" "I am. my lord; the sanitary inspectors and the workmen only left off yesterday." "Really, most unfortun —I mean, most praiseworthy. Suppose we walk down to the court-house." They went to the court-house in a body. His lordship sniffed. There was a smell of gas, and all the windows were shut. "Really, doctor," declared his lordship, "I am surprised at you deceiving me in this manner. I must adjourn the opening of the court for - two days. Have the windows open, all the windows open, in the meantime, and meet me at dinner to-night, I must really pass my severest censure upon you."
