RUGBY FOOTBALL.
MARIST'S ANNUAL MEETING. The retiring president, Mr. .T. Frnser Smith, in opening the annual meeting of tho Marist Old Boys' Football Club, attended by 100 members and supporters, referred to the poor showing made by the senior team during the first round of the competition. However, the improved form shown towards the end, together with the fact that such a. fine young set of players -were all available again, should give encouragement for the ensuing season. He said lie was glad, to see the team win its way back Into the A'section for 1935, which, coupled with'the knowledge that Swin Hadley would be playing asain, should enable the team to retain Its place. The secretary, Mr. ,T. H. Dayey, then read a report on the _club - s activities during 1 1034, disclosing n satisfactory year. At this juncture Mr. Harry Frost, chairman of the Auckland Kugby Union, was called upon to say a few words. He exhorted those present to take their training moderately, as Rugby football was a game which could not be played without ii thorough preparation, and which' as a physical exercise had untold benefits. The annual report also extended its congratulations to W. Hadley for obtaining All Black honours, and hoped that he would make the team for England this year. The club had been fortunate in obtaining the assistance of good men as coaches and extended their thanks to them. Special mention was made of the line work performed during the season by the honorary masseur. Mr. J. Gough. . The financial statement showed that the club had come through a trying year satisfactorily, mainly due to the splendid financial support given by the vice-presidents, for which the club was extremely grateful.
A discussion ensued on the advisability of sending a team to the Spillane Cup tournament to be held this Easter at Napier. It was decided to send a team comprising those senior members available together witli enough second grade players to make the team. A practice for all grades was then arranged for next Saturday at Sacred Heart College grounds.
A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring officers, particular mention being made of the valuable work done by Mr. B. J.
