TRAFFIC CONTROL.

LARGER STAFF WANTED

REVIEW BY CITY COUNCIL,

A review of traffic control in Auckland is to be made at a special meeting of the City Council at a date to be arranged. Report's by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, and the chief traffic inspector, Mr. G* R. Hogan, will be dealt with at the meeting. At last night's meeting of the council :he legal and by-laws committee reported that these reports had been considered. In the meantime, the committee reported that it considered the stall of the traffic department was inadequate to cope with present-day traffic demands, and it was recommended that the committee be empowered to increase the staff by the appointment for four additional traffic inspectors. The committee .also maintained that the vehicles now being used by the department were inadequate for the efficient administration and control of the traffic in the city, and recommended that it be empowered to provide more suitable vehicles.

Mr. W. T. Anderton held that tha council could not act on such recommendations. The council had asked for the reports now in the hands of the committee, and until it knew the reasons for the recommendations it could not authorise the stuff increases and expenditure.

Mr. M. J. Coyle, a member of the committee, said many complaints had been received about traffic, and the chief traffic inspector had reported that he did not have enough men to do the work. The committee had therefore brought down this interim report so that men and ears could be provided to deal with immediate needs. The whole question of traffic control could then be dealt with at a later date.
