YOUTH OF TO-DAY.
DISCUSSION BY MOTHERS,
At the conference of the League of Mothers held yesterday, a discussion on "The Youth of To-day" was held. The subject was opened by Mrs. T. Charter, who suggested the advisability of forming junior branches. One considered that it might be better for each member to work individually in the home, keep her daughters longer at school, and endeavour to control and guide them along right lines. It was pointed out by another member, Mrs. Utting, that there were many activities for girls to interest themselves in, such as work for the girl guides, girl citizens and different clubs connected with the various churches. It was further suggested that during the year branches might have a "daughters' evening" at which some suitable subject might be discussed. The conference commenced with a service in St. David's Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bower-Black gave an address, his subject being an epitaph on a tombsfone in an English churchyard: "She hath done what she couldn't." The words, he said, conveyed a great deal. One imagined the woman achieving the impossible, struggling on in the face of apparently insuperable difficulties, with people saying she could never do it. The epitaph showed that she had achieved her aim. Referring to the league, Mr. Bower Black said that it was setting out to do what many people considered could not be done, with the Divine aid its aims would be made possible. Following the address, the meeting adjourned to the Sunday school hall. Mrs. S. O. English presided, and on the platform with her were Mrs. F. W. Whytc, Mrs. E. R. Allen, and Mrs. G. Coats. After a brief speech of welcome, by Mrs. English, greetings from various; branches were conveyed by Mrs. WliyteJ who has just completed a trip in the north, where, she annpunced, a new branch had been formed at Whangarei. Votes of thanks were passed to the Rev. Bovver Black, the managers of St. David's Church, the tea committee, and those responsible for the flowers.
