The above club held the opening race ot the road season here last Saturday, the distance being 1134 miles (three laps) over the popular lake circuit. Times made were, on the whole, very fair, and the standard of work set by some of the riders rather above tlicir last years average. A considerable improvement toward "staying''" was noticeable in the pedalling of the ,winner, J. Gemmell (B.OL who went off limit alone and rode steadily to cross the line comfortably ahead of the middle-markers. Johnny, who is the club "baby," worked hard all last season, which helped to make his senior-junior first placing one of the most popular victories ever witnessed lure. His time was 37.8.
G. Towart (2.0), who outclassed the bunch in the straight (always his strongest in the sprint), finished in second place in 31.20. Gil. is well up in form and appears to be in better physical condition this year, which should stand him in good stead over the longer distance. In this event he rode very easily ami on the back stretches it was apparent be could have left his bunch had he so desired, at one part of the race at least. He had quite a fair break on the middle-markers.
T. Bassett (4.0), in bis first club race, finished ini third place, in 33.27, after being overhauled by the field in the last lap, and with further experience should prove a very likely pedaller. E. Williams, off 1.0, rode into sixth place with fastest time honours, which will probably earn him a scratch mark in his next event, his time being 2.0 faster than that of the scratch men. Williams is recognised as one of the club's more solid riders and has quite a number of plaeings and times to his credit, to which be will probably add this season. Time. 30.32.
The work of the scratch men, V. Blomfield, R. Jones and L. Denning, was somewhat disappointing, as they did not appear to be doing their best. However, they are likely to •make things much tougher in the near futuVe. "Bio." may have bad an added handicap in that this was the first event he had contested for some considerable time. Times wcie respectively 32.33, 32.31 and 32.32.
L. Bowman (1.15), G. Towart, R. Eagles (2.30) and P, Hulbert (1.15) all made faster time (in the above order) than the scratch men, and with E. Williams are the topmarkers in form at the moment. Next Saturday the club will hold another race over the same course and distance (11% miles), which should provide the riders with an opportunity to reshuffle the placings. PAPATOETOE CLUB. Last Tuesday night saw some very keen racing among the cyclists, probably because most of them are getting lit for the club championships, which are be run on' March 23. C. W. Allen rode with rate judgment to win the two mile A grade from E. J. Moffit, who is rapidly improving both in speed and tactics. Allen ;s the holder of the club lap record and the one mile championship. He has been riding off a fairly liberal handicap latelv, but just seems to be striking form. "Pans" Moffit will be remembered for his fine effort in winning the three miles' open handicap at the open championships Wednesday last. Moffit has a peculiar bouncing motion when riding hard and if he could get rid of the bad habit he would noon be in the top-flighters. E. Webb rode a fine r;>.ce to get third and a higher gear would see him further up. Riders to be congratulated on their efforts last Thursday at Otahuhu are M. Kara and A. Vazey, who won the one mile and two miles respectively. The B grade one mile saw the diminutive Tim Middleton snatch victory from seasoned riders. If this lad takes things easy for a few seasons he will develop into a first-class rider later on. A. Mclnnarny would be well advised to hive a spell, as he has had too 'milch racing for a first season rider, and is likely to burn himself out if he continues. This lad has a great future ahead of him if he is properly looked after. ' The run to Piha last Sunday in motor cars was a great success. Those who went thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and are enthusiastic about another trip.
