RELIEF WORK CLASSIFICATION?
In my immediate neighbourhood are five able-bodied men on sustenance. 11 am personally acquainted with each, and in course of conversation elicited that they, had been in receipt of sustenance payments for months past. Each is a skilled navvy. Three of them are keeping in form by digging and excavating generally around their backyards, awaiting a call to work. In my immediate neighbourhood also are three quite obviously handicapped men, who have been placed on the pick and shovel work. One has one arm only. Another is minus a hand, whilst the third is minus his left hand, and has but two fingers remaining on his right hand. This proves a lack of any attempt at classification. Apart from the hardship inflicted on cripples, is this sort of mismanagement going to bring us the best results for our money —the money we I taxpayers have perforce to provide I regularly and promptly ? AMICUS CURIAE.
