MT. ALBERT APPLICATION. SENIOR, STATUS PROSPECTS. CONTROL BOARD CONSIDERATION. Prior to a meeting of the Auckland Rugby League Board of Control last evening, members made an inspection o: G'arknv. Park, where many improvements have been carried out during the recess The chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell tendered a welcome to his colleagues at the beginning of what was hoped to be another season of progress in the game He was also pleased at the attendance of Mr. George Webb, president of the Hawke's Bay League, who said the prospects in their centre were better than ever known for the code in the province. The work of Mr. F. E. MeEwan, who has been appointed official electrician at G'arlaw Park, and Messrs. L. Rout and M. Wetherill, in connection with the drainage system, was emphasised. The Mount Albert United Club applied for senior status, the coach and secretary Messrs. J. Johnson and G. H. Shaw' appearing in support.
The chairman pointed out that the constitution provided that the senior competition should consist <*■ six clubs, and alteration would entail a notice of motion, a meeting of club delegates, with the final say by the Board of Control. The* senior competition was open, a 6 a matter of fact, to nomination by any clubs, and Jt was for the board to decide whicn teams would be admitted. It seemed impossible for the board at present to decide to give Mount Albert any promises or guidance. On the other hand, the matter may have to be referred to the annual meeting. . As to increasing the scope of the competition, Mr. Campbell added that he was stressing the constitutional aspect as he did not want it to be said that the present board, which was yet subject to re-election, had given any undertakin" to Mount Albert.
Mr. J. Rukutai said he was in favour of hearing the deputation which requested to be heard in committee, and Messrs. L. Binns, J. Wilkie, and W Mineham supported the procedure. Messrs. Johnson and Shaw said that the club desired t 0 organise early and already considered it would field firstclass senior „nd reserve grade teams, with i-iiich district support. After hearing details, the chairman said that the board would consider the application at a. special meeting without delay. On Ponsonby Club representation it was decided to award trophies to the third open, fourth grade, and seventh grade in the knock-out competition. A donation of £1 1/ was made to the I onsonby Amateur Swimming. Club towards the financing of Miss Mona Leydon, New Zealand champion and record-holder, on a visit to Australia. The chairman said the clubs would require to hold their annual meetings next month.
